We need to reconsider how we teach about language in schools. A narrow focus on standardized academic English turns too many students away from school. We need to explore the rich variety of Englishes and other languages that students use every day. Building students' language knowledge and growing students' linguistic repertoires will improve learning for students from all backgrounds.
